“Where digital media and the physical world converge”

The Merge is a space to celebrate and immerse in the beauty, culture, and competition of the digital realm.

Esports, short for electronic sports, Is the competition of video games, and has become a very serious endeavor around the globe. In the U.S. there are only a handful of dedicated facilities, most being retrofitted and or back of house spaces. Video Games have surpassed tv, movies, music, and sports to become the largest entertainment industry in the world.

What if there was space designed to connect with the digital events and worlds, that fans find so fascinating?

  • CONNECTION

How could architecture act as a bridge, connecting 2-dimensional media to the 3d dimensional world? How can digital media be intertwined into a spacial experience, not just as a surface application as media is typically displayed, but as if the digital and physical are actively merging together.

  • PIXELIZATION

The architecture wraps the visitor into an intoxicating mixture of digital and physical, applying the concept of pixelization and using it as a way to connect 2d digital media to the 3d dimensional world. The digital displays featured in the project allow for a forever evolving and fluid experience. The complex features several arenas, fan zones, game stations, expo centers, and other related program.

  • TECHNIQUE

How can media be embedded into a spacial experience? The technique explored in this project blends space by pushing or pulling media into different depths and angles. Media is either pushed into space or space is pushed into media. There are also moments when media breaks through.

  • GEOMETRY

The forms deployed in this project are both ancient and future, natural and digital. Natural elements were implemented into the design phase in order to achieve this effect. This language can be applied on all levels from furniture to structure.
